All Party Group response to the Government nuclear consultation

The All Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear Energy has called on the Government to give the green light to the private sector to build new nuclear power stations should they wish to do so. Submitting its response to the Government's consultation on the future of nuclear power the group says that nuclear is required if the UK is to continue to show leadership on climate change and secure our energy supplies.

Group Chair, John Robertson MP, said, "If we are to continue to lead the way on climate change then we need to use nuclear and renewables alongside investment in clean coal with carbon capture and storage to radically reduce our carbon emissions. However it is also vital that we have secure energy supplies and that means we can't become over dependent on imported gas. Given that it is a virtually indigenous source of generation given the large uranium stocks already in the UK nuclear can also help with that."
