Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear Energy and Glasgow North West MP welcomes the Energy Review Glasgow North West MP and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Nuclear Energy Group, John Robertson welcomes today’s announcement from Alastair Darling, Secretary of State for Trade and Industry on the Government’s Energy Review. “There is a place in our energy portfolio for renewables, gas, clean coal technology and nuclear and I am pleased to see this reflected in today’s statement.” “This Government has been at the forefront in addressing the issues of climate change and global warming for the security and future of our planet and must be congratulated. It is vital for national security that a balanced energy mix is introduced. “Around 20%, or a fifth of our energy already comes from nuclear. We should maintain this to ensure the lights are kept on whilst seeing a further 20% in renewables by 2020. Nuclear energy is a secure, reliable and cost effective source of continuous electrical power – and produces no CO2 emissions. The industry employs a large number of highly skilled and trained people, and has an excellent safety record “ John Robertson MP also welcomes the idea of educating the public on how they can help with energy saving policies. “Educating children in schools on energy issues and encouraging home owners to recycle and switch off unnecessary lighting is fundamental for the future of the planet. We must all work together”. |
